Delicious and nutritious airline meal?

When I was in Fiji recently I got talking to a German Girl. After the usual traveller-speak introductions of where are you from, where have you been, where are you going the German Girl asked rhetorically: Do you want to see my airline food photos? I then sat through a slide show on her digital camera with commentary of every airline meal she had eaten on her round the world journey.  From the number of photos I could see she had done a lot of flying.  I thought this behaviour was somewhat weird until I stumbled across the “the world’s first and leading website about nothing but airline food”.

Clearly my German Girl is not alone. Indeed, disturbingly, there are apparently thousands like her.

Airlinemeals.net might not win any technical awards but you can see its contributors care about their subject.  Like any user content driven site there are specific categories to cater for all tastes. You can browse through photos of Special Meals, Crew meals, Behind the Scenes Airline Catering, Food in Airline Lounges, Menu Cards, 70s 80s 90s Meals, Meals In Movies.

Like all good sub-cultures there’s always a controlling hand behind the scenes and in this case the site seems to be administrated by the mysterious “Marco” from Rotterdam, Netherlands. The site succeeds because of the engagement of its users who are active in the site Forum and with sending in all the images of meals from their travels. They go to some trouble because there’s a rating system for the meals and great detail where and when the meal was eaten (or should that be experienced?).

One feature on the site that will keep me coming back for seconds is the “Meal of the Week”.  If only the site had an RSS feed to keep me updated from week to week.

I can only hope the German Girl I met somehow also finds out about this site. So many friends outh there she may not know about.

Who would use this site?
Anyone with a fixation, concern or interest in what they may eat on their next flight.

Conclusion:
The best way I could sum the site up is - ever wanted to know what a meal on Merpati Airlines is like? Now you do.
