Campervan rental for $1 Per Day

It’s no secret that some of the biggest expenses when travelling are transport and accommodation. As much as you want to save your pennies for amazing experiences and exciting shopping, a roof over your head and a way to get around are essential. The options are endless. Will you stay in a dorm and hire a car? Book a hostel and hop on a bus?

As the world offers so many stunning destinations best seen by  road, you may have even considered campervan hire, which offers a place to stay and a way to get there in one. For those on a budget, this can be an attractive, affordable option.

When you start digging deeper into the world of campervan rentals, the news just gets better for backpackers and budget travellers. Rental companies often need campervans and motorhomes moved from one branch to another and you can help!

For independent travellers with a bit of flexibility, relocation rentals are a fantastic way to get from one location to another cheaply and quickly. If you are flexible with your travel dates, you can drive a vehicle from city to city at heavily discounted rates (many offers are just $1 per day). Free ferry and fuel offers and other specials are often included too.

Apollo offers a variety of relocation specials from their branches worldwide. There are 10 branches in Australia, 2 in New Zealand and 3 in the USA – so you can take advantage of these amazing deals as you tour country after country (you lucky thing).

What you should know

If you are considering a relocation special, there are a few things you should be aware of before you rush out and book:

  • Because relocation deals are subject to the requirements of the rental company, deals are last minute. You can’t book ahead, and there are typically no waiting lists.
  • The good news is, there are often lots of relocations around (usually more expensive) peak periods such as school holidays and Christmas.
  • Relocations are fantastic for those simply wanting to get from point A to point B. As you are given a set number of days to complete the trip, they are not as suitable for people who want to take the long and winding road. If you want to take your time on your road trip, it is best to consider regular budget campervan hire.
  • As relocation specials are “no frills” deals, you will be given a kilometre allowance in which to complete your journey. Please keep in mind that you will be responsible for paying for any additional km, as well as renting bedding, any insurance and optional extras.

What you should bring

If you’re the spontaneous type, and all this sounds good to you. Go forth and book! But before you actually leave, we recommend a few essentials you should bring on your campervan holiday:

Soft bags for your luggage. Choose soft bags because they will fit more easily in your campervan storage compartments.  Storage compartments vary in size, and you don’t want to be forced to keep your valuables in an insecure location. Choosing soft bags will also prevent hard edged suitcases causing damage to your camper

An iPod converter. Music lovers should check if their campervan is able to play their favourite tracks. Most campervans and motorhomes in Australia and New Zealand can play MP3 CDs. However, most vehicles are not fitted with iPod jacks. You can purchase a radio transmitter at most electronic stores which will enable you to play your iPod through the radio.

An esky/chilly bin. This tip is for those who enjoy a quiet beer during their road trips. Motorhome interiors are usually designed to maximise space and functionality. This leaves a little less room for a fridge than your average kitchen. Save precious fridge space for food and store your beer or fishing bait in a portable icebox

A spare SD or memory card for your camera.  You’re going to want to take a lot of photos during your campervan adventure. There’s nothing like realising you have to delete precious holiday snaps to make room for more, or being forced to purchase an overpriced memory card at a tourist trap.

Plenty of clothing. Your average rental RV will not be equipped with a washing machine or dryer. There are plenty of caravan parks which offer Laundromat facilities, however, to maximise your leisure time on a tight schedule it is best to avoid the need for frequent laundry trips.

This looks like a great promotion! I've already had a look at the options in Australia, but am now going to look at how I might be able to rent from Apollo on the North Island (NZ) and in America later this year.
